Get Out Lehigh Valley: Lock Ridge Park; Saturday, 12/7/19, 10am, Lock Ridge Park

Ends: 12/07/19

Enjoy the impressive stone structures and arches at this Lehigh County park. What looks like a stone castle was once a coal burning iron furnace. The beauty of the furnace and surrounding structures belie their industrial roots. Lock Ridge Park offers a variety of recreational activities within its 59 acres, including trails for hiking, biking, and nature study. There is a field for T-ball and girls’ softball plus a pavilion. Swabia Creek runs through the park. Lock Ridge Furnace was an important part of the early iron industry in the region. Lock Ridge operated as an iron mill from 1868 until 1921. Lehigh County acquired the Furnace in 1972 from the William Butz family. In 1981, it was listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The Lehigh County Historical Society cares for the Lock Ridge Furnace Museum, and gives tours on weekends from May to September. This hike is appropriate for children of all ages. Dogs on leash are welcome. Bring your camera to capture the details and beauty of the old iron works. The trail we’ll walk on is mostly macadam with a section of brick surface near the end. The trail is mostly level. DIRECTIONS: From US Route 22 take Route 100 South for 1.8 miles.
