We start at the Disc Golf and Fishing Pond parking lot near the Marina at Lake Nockamixon. This out-and-back hike takes us up Maycock Mountain, elevation 960 feet/293 meters, the highest summit in Bucks County. However, there is no view on top. We start near an old farm pond and walk through the Disc Golf course to E. Saw Mill Road. For about 15 minutes we’ll walk on a gravel woods road to a water tower. Then we’ll traipse uphill on a rocky path through mature forest and a section of forest that was cut down in 2009 to create more diverse habitat for wildlife. Notice the very impressive boulders along the trail. Rock climbers enjoy clambering all over these. These diabase rocks were formed 200 million years ago during the Triassic era and are extremely erosion resistant.
This 5,286-acre State Park includes the 1,450-acre Lake Nockamixon, popular for sailboats, kayaks, and canoes. There’s an orienteering course plus many miles of hiking and mountain bike trails.
This hike is appropriate for children 6 years old and older. Dogs on leash are welcome. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Bring bug spray, hiking poles/walking sticks, and cameras to capture images of the rock formations. Bathrooms are available at Disc Golf Parking Lot. DIRECTIONS: Take either Route 412 or Route 313 to Route 563/Mountain View Road. Travel on Rt. 563 to the entrance of The Marina at Harrisburg School Road.
