Wildlands Conservancy recently bought 72 acres of hemlock swamp at Thomas Darling Preserve. home of the northern flying squirrel at Thomas Darling Preserve. We’ll walk two miles through sheep laurel on moss covered forest trails and on narrow boardwalks over bog and fern habitat. The Preserve, a joint venture between Wildlands Conservancy and The Nature Conservancy, supports a wide variety of plant and animal species, including some not typically found in other areas. Wildlands is restoring sections of this 2,500-acre glacial wetland to make it more inviting to the northern flying squirrel. There are no bathrooms at Thomas Darling. So, if need be, stop at Blakeslee or before. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The walk is appropriate for children of all ages. However, these trails are not stroller friendly! Dogs on leash are welcome. Bring hiking poles or a walking stick. Bring binoculars and/or camera for wildlife and early wildflower observations. DIRECTIONS: Take I-476 N to Exit 95. Turn left onto Route 940 E. Travel 6.4 miles on Rt. 940 to the traffic light at Blakeslee at Route 115 and turn left onto Rt. 115 N. Travel 1.1 miles on Rt. 115 to Burger Road on the right. Follow Burger Road for 0.8 miles to the dirt parking lot on the right at entrance to Thomas Darling Preserve. There are many other hiking trails in the area so you could make a whole day of your visit to the Poconos.
